Cat Hydration Facts
Cats evolved as desert animals and have a low thirst drive. They are designed to get most of their water from food (prey is ~70% water). This is why dry-kibble-only cats are chronically mildly dehydrated, contributing to kidney disease and urinary issues.
Signs of dehydration in cats
- Skin tent test: Pinch skin between shoulder blades - should snap back immediately
- Dry, tacky gums
- Sunken eyes
- Lethargy
- Decreased urination (smaller/fewer clumps in litter)
How to get a cat to drink more water?
- Cat water fountain (cats prefer running water)
- Multiple water stations throughout home
- Wide, shallow bowls (whisker-friendly)
- Add water to dry food or switch to wet food
- Fresh water daily (cats reject stale water)
