The Akita is the dog behind the world's most famous loyalty story. Hachikō waited at Tokyo's Shibuya Station for his deceased owner every day for 9 years. This captures one dimension perfectly — their loyalty is absolute. But the Akita is also independent, dominant, potentially aggressive with other animals, and unsuitable for inexperienced owners.
History
Originating in northern Japan's Akita prefecture, bred for hunting bear, boar, and deer. Designated a Japanese "natural treasure" in 1931. Helen Keller brought the first Akita to America in 1937. Today Japanese Akita and American Akita are separate breeds in most countries except the AKC.

Temperament
Loyalty
Quiet, dignified, unwavering commitment. They demonstrate affection by being present, alert, and protective at all times.
Independence
Akitas evaluate commands and comply when they see logic. Bred to make independent decisions while hunting dangerous game.
Animal Aggression
Strong predisposition toward same-sex aggression. Two intact males or females in the same household leads to serious fighting. High prey drive makes them dangerous to cats and small dogs.
Protectiveness
Natural guardians — suspicious of strangers, territorial. Requires extensive socialization to prevent aggression toward visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Akitas good family dogs?
With experienced owners, older children, and no same-sex dogs — yes. Not suitable for first-time owners.
Can Akitas live with other dogs?
Opposite-sex pairs (both altered) have best success. Same-sex pairs frequently develop serious aggression. Many breed clubs recommend they be the only dog.
