Cats and plants are a dangerous combination. Many common houseplants and garden flowers are toxic to cats -- and lilies alone kill thousands of cats every year. As an obligate carnivore with a taste for nibbling greenery, your cat does not distinguish between safe and deadly plants.
DEADLY Plants (Can Kill With Small Amounts)
| Plant | Toxic Part | Effect | Lethal? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lilies (all true lilies) | ALL parts -- even pollen, water in vase | Acute kidney failure within 24-72 hours | YES -- often fatal |
| Sago Palm | All parts, especially seeds | Liver failure | YES -- 50% mortality even with treatment |
| Oleander | All parts | Cardiac glycosides -- heart failure | YES |
| Autumn Crocus | All parts | Multi-organ failure | YES |

- Easter lilies, tiger lilies, Asiatic lilies, daylilies, stargazer lilies -- ALL lethal

- Treatment must begin IMMEDIATELY (aggressive IV fluids for 48-72 hours)
- Without treatment: death within 3-7 days

Frequently Asked Questions
Are peace lilies as dangerous as true lilies?
No -- despite the name, peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) are NOT true lilies. They cause oral irritation and drooling but are not associated with kidney failure. True lilies (Lilium species: Easter, tiger, Asiatic, stargazer) and daylilies (Hemerocallis) are the deadly ones. However, peace lilies should still be kept away from cats as they cause uncomfortable mouth irritation. When in doubt about any plant, check the ASPCA Toxic Plant Database online.
