Understanding Quality of Life Assessment
Adapted from the HHHHHMM Scale by Dr. Alice Villalobos. Evaluates Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, and More Good Days Than Bad.
When should I consider quality of life for my senior dog?
When your dog has a terminal illness, chronic unmanageable pain, significant mobility loss, or when bad days outnumber good ones. This helps objectify an emotional decision.
This is the hardest decision. What should I know?
You know your dog best. If they no longer enjoy what once brought joy, if pain persists despite medication, or if bad days dominate - discuss end-of-life options with your vet. Choosing to prevent suffering is an act of love.
