Essential Oil Safety Guide for Pets
Cats are especially sensitive to essential oils because they lack a liver enzyme (glucuronyl transferase) needed to metabolize many compounds. What is safe for humans or even dogs can be fatal to cats.
| Oil | Dogs | Cats | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tea Tree (Melaleuca) | TOXIC | VERY TOXIC | Even small amounts cause tremors, weakness, collapse |
| Lavender | Generally Safe (diluted) | CAUTION | Only safe for cats in very well-ventilated areas, never applied |
| Peppermint | Caution (diluted only) | TOXIC | Can cause breathing difficulties, liver damage in cats |
| Eucalyptus | Caution | TOXIC | Phenols dangerous to cats |
| Citrus Oils | Caution | TOXIC | Limonene is toxic to cats |
What are signs of essential oil poisoning in pets?
Drooling, vomiting, tremors, difficulty breathing, wobbling/ataxia, lethargy, low body temperature, liver failure. Cats may develop symptoms from inhalation alone (diffusers). Seek emergency vet care immediately.
Are essential oil diffusers safe around pets?
Active diffusers pose risk to cats even without direct contact - microdroplets land on fur and are ingested during grooming. If diffusing around cats: use pet-safe oils only, ensure excellent ventilation, never diffuse in an enclosed room with the cat, and stop immediately if any symptoms appear.
